Will I ever be happy again after menopause?

So you're on the wild ride of menopause and wondering when the fuck this shit is over and whether you'll ever get your "self" back. Hot flashes, mood swings, and insomnia are just a few of the pain-in-the-ass symptoms you may be experiencing.

For me, menopause and mental health means coming out of a pretty dark tunnel. I can say that I've overcome deep depression in menopause; I have a much more leisurely life because menopausal stress and symptoms forced me to cut back; and I have become masterful of self-care and putting myself first, thanks to menopause.

Many women report feeling a renewed sense of freedom and happiness post-menopause. Some of us find joy in not having to worry about periods anymore. Others embrace their newfound energy and pursuit of hobbies long neglected.

Bet you're wondering if you'll ever be truly happy again after menopause. Spoiler alert: Yes, you absolutely can be. Let's dive into why it's possible, maybe even likely.

The science behind post-menopausal happiness

You might be wondering if there's any scientific evidence to back up such claims. Studies indicate that many women report improved mood and quality of life post-menopause. Once the hormonal rollercoaster stabilizes, many women find themselves in a better emotional state. So, it's not just wishful thinking—there's science to support it.

I would concur. Now that I know what it feels like to be in complete hormonal meltdown - a situation that felt dire and never-ending - vs. what I feel like now, I can see how hormonal upheaval played a tremendous part in my happiness during the perimenopausal years.

Post-menopause and embracing the new normal

So, how exactly do you embrace this new phase of life and find happiness? First, it helps to maintain a sense of humor about the whole ordeal. Laughing at the absurdity of hot flashes can be oddly therapeutic. Laughing with other women who totally get it? Even more so.

Secondly, focus on self-care. Whether it’s Pilates or yoga, meditation, or just taking a long bath, find what makes you feel good and stick with it. If you can afford manicures, pedicures and massages, fucking book that shit every month. You deserve it. You're officially entering your golden years and it's time for you. First. Always.

And finally, stay connected. Whether it's through social media, community groups, texting with friends or old-fashioned phone calls, maintaining relationships can boost your mood significantly.

Doctors and medical professionals also have some tips for navigating post-menopausal life. Dr. Sarah Gottfried, a renowned gynecologist, suggests focusing on a balanced diet and regular exercise to keep your mood stable. She also recommends staying mentally active—whether it’s through puzzles, reading, or learning a new skill. According to Dr. Gottfried, these activities can help you stay sharp and happy in your post-menopausal years.

So, will you ever be happy again after menopause?

The answer is a resounding yes. While the journey through menopause can be rocky, many women find a renewed sense of joy and freedom on the other side. Practice acceptance of the changes, put self-care first and staying connected, and you can look forward to a happy and fulfilling post-menopausal life. Now, go out there and live your best life—hot flashes and all!
